A scandalous history has been written between the teacher-student relationship in Bangladesh after the burning to death of Nusrat, who refused to withdraw sexual harassment charges against her madrasah's principal. After this incident, there is a continuous storm of protest across the country to seeking justice for Nusrat. Protesters are not just claiming the trial of Siraj and his gang, rather they want assurance from government that such incident does not happen in future. I think, these crimes cannot be stopped without some reforms even after making laws or rules.
We can say, for doing these works, principal Siraj and his gang had got favour from managing committee/governing body rules which is instructed by ministry of education. I think the loopholes in this system are not less responsible than principal Siraj.
Because, we know that 94 per cent of our country's educational institute like school, college madrasah are MPO enlisted , and these MPO enlisted institutions run by a committee named managing committee or governing body which is led by local powerful political leaders and activities. They use educational institution as political tools; where principal is secretary and students are a general activist of this political sector. If these were the main sceneries of our educational institutes, what will we hope from our teacher like Siraj?
However, from the last few decades, the teachers were expressing their complaint against local managing committee and their activities. At the same time they wanted to abolish this system. Because, the managing committee and the Principal together can change any rule instantly. They can turn any illegal task into legal or legal into illegal.
Sometimes we have noticed in our daily newspaper headlines that--students of various educational institutions spend 2-3 hours with flower for receiving MP, Minister, Local powerful political leader or Chairman , and principal or Head master spend a lots of money from institution's fund for their reception /felicitation. Maximum principal often arranges a dance program by female students only for political leader's satisfaction. Sometimes they declare holiday and obligate the students to go and participate in political activities.
The fact is that, these activities have not been done by teachers of any government institutions except the MPO enlisted institutions. Because, their job is in the hands of these leaders. So they are always ready to please them and flatter them to enjoy more opportunities from the institutions. They think that the more they will flatter them their service will be longer lasting .for these reasons, governing body ensures all the safeties for the principal or headmaster, and thus they are guaranteed of get away from any immoral acts. Sonagzi's madrasah student Nusrat is one of notorious examples of the misuse of power by the principal and managing committee.
Recently, MPO enlisted teachers recruitment is being officially but disposal or dismissal power still remain on the hand of managing or governing body. As a result, maximum teachers are helpless and hostage to the leaders. They cannot practice their morality and duty perfectly due to Afraid of losing their job. Maximum teachers are forced to accept any unreasonable and unacceptable demands from the governing body otherwise, they could lose their job.
From the murder of Nusrat, it can be assumed that country's teachers and student how much headed by the managing committee and principal? It is a example to know how deep relations they can generate between principal and managing committee of a education institution that was proved by the involvement and arrested of Additional deputy Magistrate (ADM) Awami League president, general secretary, councillor, police station OC etc to burn Nusrat with Siraj in Sonagazi Upozila?
Anybody can raise question: why did not any teacher protest against this immoral incident despite there is a lot of teachers and employee in that institution? Raising such a question among the teachers and employee is not unusual, but it is not usual to keep silent and follow their instructions to protect own job.
There was a time when the villagers used to set up educational institutions to spread the education to the people through their own initiative and they collected rice, paddy and money from villagers and rich persons to pay salaries to the teachers. But now the government is carrying 100 per cent salary, then why does managing committee exist in MPO enlisted institutions?
It is not the first time that sexual harassment is against students of Siraj. But many times he did same work in earlier, and simply gets rid of the managing committee. Many such incidents happen in our country, but the incidents of these murders are often stumbling due to the managing committee's relation with the Head master.
Once upon a time it seemed teachers were most respected person in our society. Unfortunately, because of some teachers' scandalous works stigma has been smeared the profession. Just think, if teachers do not dare to protest injustice and moral values, how can they teach our children about how to protest against injustice, immorality? Now it's time to nationalize the entire education system and eliminate this strange management. If it takes time for nationalization, then the managing committee act should cancel.
